New Year Brings Changes to United Way Board of Directors
As we welcome the new year, a new team is forming to further the mission of United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.
In December 2012, Alan Shelton was elected President of the United Way Board of Directors. Alan is a senior food scientist with Cargill Value Added Meats, where he has been employed for 33 years.
Committed to community service, he serves or has served on the boards of many non-profit agencies, including the Community Health Center, Smart Beginnings of the Shenandoah Valley, JMU Social Work, the Boys and Girls Club of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Harrisonburg Rockingham Free Clinic, Autumn Valley Guardianship, American Heart Association, Plains Area Day Care, Harrisonburg/Rockingham Dental Clinic, and Compeer.

Alan is also a Big Brother at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, where he was voted "Big of the Year" in 2009.

The staff, board and myself are committed to improving the lives of those most in need, and we can only accomplish this through the dedication of our partner agencies. I am honored to be chosen for the President of United Way and I will do whatever I can to help build a better tomorrow.”
New to the United Way Board are: Bill Bayer, VP of Marketing at the Rockingham Group, Rick Haushalter, Senior VP and COO at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and co-owner of White Oak Lavender Farm, Scott Kizner, Superintendent of Harrisonburg City Public Schools and Tom Mendez, VP at BB&T Insurance Services and United Way Campaign Co-Chair.Alan and his wife, Jane Hubbell, live in Harrisonburg and have three grown children.
