Harrisonburg, VA (September 7, 2006) -- The United Way 2006 Community Investment Campaign Kick-Off Breakfast was held this morning with more than 120 community leaders gathering to energize the start of the 2006 fundraising drive. The United Way?s goal for 2006 is to build a stronger community by creating lasting change in the lives of more than 11,000 people in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County by raising $1,010,000.
The 2006 Pacesetter?s which include: BB & T, Blue Ridge Legal Services, Cargill Dayton, Cargill Timberville, Cargill Distribution Center, Clark & Bradshaw, First Bank & Trust, FNB Southeast, Lee & Associates, PBGH, Pilgrim?s Pride, Planter?s Bank, Rockingham Heritage Bank, Rockingham National Bank, RR Donnelley, Shenandoah Shared Hospital Services, SunTrust, Tenneco, United Way Board & Staff, and Wachovia, have set the pace by raising more than $155,000, which is 9% ahead of last year?s Pacesetter campaign.
Each year United Way hosts this event to share how each person?s contribution to United Way makes a difference in our community, and this year is no different. Betty Kremer and Tina Beachy, teachers with the IMPACT program shared the story of Maria Pena and how this community?s contributions to United Way are building a brighter future for Maria and her family.
To continue on the theme of ?Building a Stronger Community, Together? Milt McPike, VP of Operations, with Cargill shared with the crowd why he, and Cargill, thinks it is important to support our community. Milt says, ?the blueprint for a successful community is everyone working together to make it strong?.
To get the crowd ready to begin construction on their workplace campaigns Terry Weaver, 2006 Campaign Chair, with Lee & Associates, had everyone on their feet and don their ceremonial hard hat. Terry then challenged each person to use the blueprint provided by United Way to build the best campaign ever.
